What is the DaNA chat?
The DaNA chat is an AI Assistant that uses artificial intelligence to power features available to 23andMe+ Premium and Total Health members. The DaNA chat is available through a chat interface to answer questions related to 23andMe products, services, or Research, and also powers certain 23andMe+ features providing additional insights and recommendations. When you are talking to the DaNA chat, it’s like you’re having a conversation with an extensive library of articles written and/or reviewed by experts including scientists, genetic counselors, population geneticists and epidemiologists. That leads to science-backed answers and trustworthy information on ancestry, health and genetics.

How can I use the DaNA chat?
23andMe+ Premium Beta members can explore the AI Health Summary (powered by the DaNA chat) in their Health tab - look for the header in the image below. Join Beta following these steps.
As 23andMe+ Premium members explore their product offerings, they can click this icon (in the upper right) to start a conversation with the DaNA chat. Simply ask your question using the chat interface and the DaNA chat will try to answer the question based on the 23andMe knowledge available.
What kinds of questions can I ask the DaNA chat?
The DaNA chat can answer questions related to 23andMe Ancestry and Health offerings or broader questions related to genetics education or research.
Here are some examples of what you could ask:
- What genetic reports would be most relevant for me to review if I’m interested in optimizing my sleep?
- Why does a close family member have ancestral origins I don't have?
- What does it mean to have one APOE variant detected?
- How accurate are the relationships you predict between relatives?
- I would like to learn more about the role that genetics plays in depression and lifestyle actions to reduce my likelihood of developing it.
When asking questions to the DaNA chat, please don't include any personal details or account information. The assistant cannot currently access your account or genetic results.
How are the DaNA chat's responses generated?
the DaNA chat learns from various help resources on 23andMe, such as help center articles, learning hub pages, blog posts, whitepapers and more. It scans these sources to find information most relevant to your question and summarizes it in an answer using generative AI.
Does the DaNA chat use my personal information?
No, the DaNA chat does not have access to any of your personal information (such as family trees and health reports results). This means it cannot summarize your specific genetic results, but it can help you answer questions about a report and to navigate our product, or provide links to all genetic reports related to your interest. By chatting with the DaNA chat, you agree all chats may be retained and used as described in our Privacy Statement.
How accurate is the DaNA chat?
The DaNA chat strives to provide accurate and helpful responses based on 23andMe’s library. However, as with all generative AI, the DaNA chat may not always produce the perfect response or be entirely accurate. This tool is intended for educational purposes and should not be used as medical advice. We’re always working to improve, so please share feedback (using thumbs-up/down icons) if something looks incorrect.
How many countries and languages does the DaNA chat support?
The DaNA chat chat is currently only available in English within the United States, but we may expand availability to new languages and countries over time.
